Please Note:
- This article is for any merchant who has migrated away from using checkout.liquid and are now using checkout extensibility to manage their thank you and order status pages.
- Please note that integrations with Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager are not compatible with checkout extensibility. Once checkout extensibility has been enabled, these integrations will no longer send any event data into Google Analytics.
Grapevine Surveys is a checkout extensibility compatible app, making it much easier for the thousands of merchants who leverage post-purchase surveys to include, preview and deploy surveys to the order thank you and order status page directly from within the Shopify checkout editor.

What is checkout extensibility
Checkout extensibility will eventually become the sole way for merchants to customize their Shopify Checkout. As a result, checkout.liquid has been deprecated and will be removed August 13, 2024.
Checkout extensibility is a suite of powerful platform features that make it easier for merchants to customize the checkout in a way that's app-based, upgrade-safe, higher-converting, and integrated with Shop Pay.
With checkout extensibility, merchants can make code-free customizations to their checkout using apps and branding tools as well as a collection of components and APIs provided by Shopify. The goal is to enhance the buying journey by building more personalised checkout and post-checkout experiences for customers.
Once your store has been migrated to use checkout extensibility, you can use the Shopify checkout editor to include your survey into your Order Status Page and Thank you Page.
Which of my surveys will be displayed?
Your post-purchase checkout pages will display the survey that has been made visible on the Order Status Page (OSP) channel within the Grapevine Surveys app:
The conditional options to display the survey to new, returning or all customers will be observed. For example, if you have one survey published on the Order Status Page (OSP) for new customers and a completely different survey published for returning customers, these conditions are compatible with checkout extensibility and the correct survey will be presented to the customer based on those conditions.
All of our available survey types are also compatible with checkout extensibility.
Using the checkout editor to add the Grapevine Surveys app block
Within the Shopify Admin, go to Settings > Checkout and you will see a card titled Checkout customization. Click on the Customize button to enter the checkout editor:
Shopify checkout customization
The Grapevine Surveys app block can be added to both the Thank You Page (the initial post-purchase page after checkout) and the Order Status Page (the page used to display the order summary at any point after the initial purchase).
You will need to add and configure the Grapevine Surveys app block for each post-purchase page separately, however, the steps you need to take are identical for each.
You will see the option to customise the Thank you and Order status pages by clicking on the dropdown in the top bar of the checkout editor:
Let's go ahead and customize the Thank You Page.
Within the checkout editor, click on the dropdown selector at the top of the page and select the Thank you option:
Within the left-hand panel of the checkout editor, locate and click the Add app block link at the bottom of the pane:
Grapevine Surveys will then appear in the left-hand panel as an available app block:
Click on the Survey Form app block and the checkout editor preview panel will update to show the Grapevine Survey app block at the top of your Thank You Page:
That's it!
Hit the Save button in the top right of the checkout editor and your survey will start appearing on the post-purchase Thank You Page.
Repeat this process to add your survey to your Order Status Page. Again, you will see the option to customise Order status pages by clicking on the dropdown in the top bar of the checkout editor.
How do I change the position of my survey on these pages?
We recommend placing the Grapevine Survey app block at the top of the Order details section to ensure that your response rate remains high.
You can, however, rearrange the order of the blocks by dragging and dropping them into your desired location:
You can even place the survey in the Order summary section of the thank you page if you choose to:
As mentioned, our recommendation is to position your survey at the top of the Order details section of the page to give it the best chance of being seen by the customer.
If you do make any changes to the position of your survey, then please remember to hit the Save button in the top right of the checkout editor.
How will survey responses from the checkout extensibility pages appear in the app?
Once you have added the Grapevine Surveys app block to your Order Status Page and/or Thank You Page via the checkout editor, you should start receiving survey responses into the app.
We've added two new channels in Grapevine Surveys to cater for responses submitted via checkout extensibility. The new channels are:
- Order Status Page (Extensible Checkout)
- Thank you Page (Extensible Checkout)
You will see these channels listed against your survey responses:
The graphs you see when viewing a survey will also be filterable by these new channels.
You will also able to determine if customers are more likely to submit your survey on the Thank You Page immediately after a purchase, or at a later date when revisiting their order summary on the Order Status Page by looking at the Responses Over Time by Channel chart:
FAQs
Are my surveys fully compatible with checkout extensibility? For example, I have configured my survey to only be answered once per customer. Will those settings still be applied?
Surveys added to the Order Status Page and Thank You Page using the checkout editor will observe the majority of settings and publishing options that have been configured for your survey, e.g. tagging, only capturing one response per customer, displaying the survey to new or returning customers etc.
The only settings that will not be carried across are any custom CSS styles that you may have specified for the Order Status Page. You can customize the branding of your checkout pages in the checkout editor where you can add your brand's logo, add a background image, change the colors, and choose a new font to make the checkout page match your business.
What channels should I make my surveys visible on for them to work with checkout extensibility?
You need to make sure that your survey is set to be visible on the Order Status Page (OSP) channel within the Grapevine Surveys app for it to appear on either the Order Status Page and the Thank You Page.
Will my Grapevine Surveys automatically appear on the Order Status Page and Thank You Page or do I have to add them manually using the Checkout Editor?
You will need to make sure that you have added the surveys to both the Order Status Page and Thank You Page using the Checkout Editor and also make sure that your survey is set to be visible on the Order Status Page within the Grapevine Surveys app.
Will the Google Analytics integration still create GA events when a survey response is received?
Unfortunately, checkout extensibility does not currently support the creation of Google Analytics events when a survey is submitted from an Order Status Page or Thank You Page. We will continue to look for a solution to this limitation.
Coming Soon
We're currently investigating the potential to publish a specific survey on the Thank You Page and a completely different survey on the Order Status Page. We will update this article once we know if this is possible.
