Overview
Once you've created a survey, you'll need to decide how and when that survey should be presented to a customer. Managing the visibility of your surveys is how you control how they are presented and this is controlled on a per survey basis.
If you've created a "How did you hear about us?" survey, then you'll probably want that survey to appear on the Order Thank You (OTY) page immediately after a successful checkout on your Online Store. If you sell in person using Shopify POS, you'll probably want to ask the same or similar survey question after a customer has made an in-store purchase.
Perhaps you're interested in collecting feedback from customers related to their overall experience of using your store. Our standalone surveys channel provides the opportunity to create a different survey for each customer touch-point, allowing you to include the unique survey URLs in your Shopify Notifications templates or distribute them via the marketing tools of your choice.
Setting the visibility of a survey controls how and where your surveys will appear. We refer to these visibility options as channels and surveys can be published across more than one channel at the same time.
We also have an options within the Order thank you page / order status page channel to present a different survey to either new customers or returning customers. You can even publish a different survey for each Shopify POS location that you operate. This allows a more focused survey question based on the potential differences in clientele at each location where you sell in person.
When survey responses are submitted, we also capture the channel that the survey was submitted from, providing insight into which channels are collecting the most survey responses.
What channels can surveys be published to?
Let's take a look at the options for managing the visibility of your surveys. We have defined the following as channels to which you can publish your surveys to:
-
Order thank you page / order status page
A survey widget will appear at the top of the order thank you page after a successful checkout on your online store. The survey widget will also appear on the order status page if the survey has not already been taken and a customer revisits their order status. -
Standalone page
This is a survey that is presented within a dedicated survey page, dynamically created by the app, hosted on your store using your theme's header, footer and styling. It produces a unique URL that can be included in your marketing automation messages to request customers to complete a survey. -
Embedded survey
For teams building out headless Shopify solutions, this option lets you embed your survey into any web page, on any domain. -
Shopify POS
For asking in-person survey questions to customers via the Shopify POS app immediately after checkout. The survey can be accessed from the Shopify POS Order Summary screen by clicking on the Grapevine tile within the APPS section.
How to manage survey visibility
Each survey's visibility can be controlled via the Manage Visibility panel to the right of the survey editor:
The survey editor can be accessed by choosing to edit one of your surveys.
You can then select which of your channels you'd like your survey to be accessible from.
If you try to enable a survey for a channel that already has an active survey, a warning dialogue will appear stating the name of the currently active survey that will be replaced by choosing this channel:
Deactivating a survey from all channels
If you run seasonal or campaign driven surveys, you may wish to deactivate a survey across all channels to prevent it from being displayed. Equally, you may have just created a survey, but are not yet ready to publish it on any of your available channels.
To do this, make sure that all channels are unchecked before saving. You will then be presented with a dialog for you to confirm that your survey will be unpublished:
If you do not wish to replace the active survey for that channel, then simply uncheck that channel before saving your survey.

FAQs
How do I know, at a glance, which channel my surveys are published to?
Tags for each visible channel will appear next to the survey title:
Channel visibility can be updated at any time by managing the visibility of the survey in the survey editor.
What if we don't use Shopify's order thank you page or order status page?
For customers that utilise apps like One Click Upsell, or any other offsite checkout, please take a look at our article on embedding surveys into Shopify headless storefronts.
Can I send the survey as an email?
The survey can't be sent as an email, however, you can use our standalone survey feature to include a link to the survey in your Shopify notification emails or preferred marketing automations tool.

Can the survey be displayed as a pop-up?
Whilst we don't have a pop-up/overlay channel for managing the visibility of your surveys, we can offer a workaround that achieves a similar result on the order thank you page / order status page. Please take a look at our can the survey be displayed as a pop-up? article for further information.
